Rethinking the tendering frameworks of construction contractors in the context of a soft systems methodology

Limited research has been conducted on the internal tendering procedures (ITP) of construction contractors because of the commercially sensitive and confidential nature of the subject matter. This limitation explains the reluctance of contractors to undergo interviews. Existing research (outside bid/no-bid and margin decision factor identification and subsequent decision modeling development) only begins to provide insights into key tendering stages, particularly around risk assessments and corporate review processes. Early research suggested one to three review stages. However, when considering the whole work procurement process from prospect identification to contract execution, five to seven series of reviews can be arguably applied by some contractors, wherein some reviews stepped through several layers of internal senior management. Tendering processes were presented as flowchart models that traditionally follow “hard” system (rectangular shapes and straight line arrows) steps, which suggest that a precise process also leads to precise results. However, given that contractors do not win every tender they submit, the process is less precise than that suggested in rigidly structured flowcharts. Twenty-five detailed semi-structured interviews were held with purposely selected high-profile publicly and privately owned construction companies in Australia with significantly varied turnovers. Analyses show that contractors are concerned about the negative effects of increasing corporate governance demands, with many stating that people involved are the most critical element to tendering success. A new way of presenting the ITP of contractors is assessed using a soft systems methodology (SSM) approach. SSM offers an alternative way of considering human interaction challenges within the ITP of contractors, which needs to be tested with the industry. The format graphics of SSM guidelines are presented as a way of offering contractors a different approach, which may assist individuals who are looking to re-structure their tendering activities in a more humanistic and less rigid procedural approach.

Comparison of analytical procedures for measuring phosphorus content of animal manures in China

The concentration and components of manure phosphorus (P) are key factors determining potential P bioavailability and runoff. The distribution of P forms in swine, poultry and cattle manures collected from intensive and extensive production systems in several areas of China was investigated with sequential fractionation and a simplified two-step (NaHCO -NaOH/EDTA) procedures. The mean total P concentration, determined by the sequential fractionation procedure of intensive swine, poultry and cattle manure, expressed as g·kg , was 14.9, 13.4 and 5.8 g·kg , respectively, and 4.4 g·kg in extensive cattle manure. In intensive swine, poultry and cattle manure about 73%, 74% and 79% of total P, respectively, was bioavailable (i.e., P extracted by H O and NaHCO ) and 78% in extensive cattle manure. The results indicated the relative environmental risk, from high to low, of swine, poultry and cattle manure. There is considerable regional variation in animal manure P across China, which needs to be considered when developing manure management strategies.

Review of surgical robotic systems for keyhole and endoscopic procedures: state of the art and perspectives

摘要: Minimally invasive surgery, including laparoscopic and thoracoscopic procedures, benefits patients in terms of improved postoperative outcomes and short recovery time. The challenges in hand–eye coordination and manipulation dexterity during the aforementioned procedures have inspired an enormous wave of developments on surgical robotic systems to assist keyhole and endoscopic procedures in the past decades. This paper presents a systematic review of the state-of-the-art systems, picturing a detailed landscape of the system configurations, actuation schemes, and control approaches of the existing surgical robotic systems for keyhole and endoscopic procedures. The development challenges and future perspectives are discussed in depth to point out the need for new enabling technologies and inspire future researches.

摘要: 论坛和博客的普及为大量信息的处理带来了挑战和机遇。基于不同主题的信息通常包含了主观的定性词语,需要经过统计分析转换为可用的定量数据。这些数据如不恰当处理则会影响观点的正确表达。每个观点相关词的主要表义各有不同。为将词的语义转换为数据并加强对观点挖掘的分析,我们提出了一种新颖的加权方案,称为词权重推测法(inferred word weighting, IWW)。IWW通过对语境下和表义中词语重要性的计算对算法进行增强。相对已有的方法,本文提出的加权方法从分析的视角上为词语提供了合适的权重。此外,通过对包含停用词的文本分类的性能研究,提供了另一种校验方法,作为对所提出的新加权方法的补充。而通常这些停用词都会在文本处理时移除。将包含停用词这一新概念应用于本文提出的加权方法和已有加权方法,可观察到2个现象:(1)文本分类性能增强;(2)包含停用词与否,所造成的文本处理结果的差异在所提出的方法中较小,而在已有方法中较大。进而,从这2种现象得出推论。基于基准数据集的实验结果表明所提出的方法在分类精度上具有优化潜力。
